Measuring what matters with clarity, care, and purpose.

Dr. Mary Cochron is an educational measurement leader, former state Director of Assessment, and founder of Metimur.

With nearly two decades of experience spanning classrooms, districts, state agencies, and multi-state testing systems, she specializes in aligning complex assessment initiatives with the people they are meant to serve.

Known for translating technical systems into clear, actionable strategy, Dr. Mary brings both precision and compassion to every partnership. She lives in Fresno with her husband, two children, three dogs, and an unknown number of goldfish.

The Story Behind Metimur

Metimur was founded on a simple conviction: assessment should serve people, not pressure them.

After nearly two decades working in classrooms, district offices, state departments of education, and large-scale multi-state assessment programs, Dr. Mary Cochron saw the same pattern repeat itself. Well-intentioned systems were often built with technical strength but disconnected from the educators, students, and families they were meant to support.

Her career began as a classroom teacher in 2005, where her emphasis on student-centered learning earned her recognition as the 2010 San Joaquin Valley Social Studies Middle School Teacher of the Year. A district-level assignment in research, evaluation, and assessment sparked a deeper fascination with educational measurement, ultimately shaping her doctoral work and professional path.

From district leadership to serving as Oregon’s Director of Assessment, and later managing statewide programs with national assessment organizations, Dr. Mary developed a dual expertise: psychometric precision and program management discipline.

Metimur was created to bring those strengths together ensuring that assessment systems are not only technically sound, but humane, transparent, and purpose-driven.

Rooted in the Latin phrase metimur, meaning 'we measure'. The company’s work centers on helping education leaders design and implement assessment systems grounded in integrity, compassion, and common purpose.

Our Work

Metimur partners with education agencies, nonprofits, and leadership teams to design, implement, and refine assessment systems that align policy, practice, and communication.

Services include:

  • Project management and implementation support for statewide and district-level initiatives

  • Technical consultation on assessment design, logistics, and alignment

  • Leadership strategy and clarity coaching during periods of systemic change

Every engagement begins with listening and ends with hands-on implementation support of a fully customized action plan. The goal is not simply compliance or completion, but coherence of systems that function effectively and restore trust in how learning is measured.

Looking Ahead

The next chapter of Metimur centers on Compassionate Assessment—an expanding body of work dedicated to rebuilding trust and clarity in assessment culture.

Through writing, workshops, and collaborative partnerships, Dr. Mary is advancing a framework that integrates technical rigor with ethical responsibility. Her upcoming book, Compassionate Assessment: Rebuilding Trust and Purpose in How We Measure Learning (coming 2026), expands on this vision and invites educators, policymakers, and community leaders into a deeper conversation about what measurement should accomplish.

Doing assessment well is not about testing more, it’s about measuring better.
